1. Your heart
During cycling, the heart beats faster than usual. This exercises the heart and can help reduce the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease by 46% according to a studyof a quarter of a million people.
2. Your weight
By cycling you are working your whole body, including your metabolism which gets a boost and burns a greater number of calories for hours after you’ve finished – helping you to shed the pounds and feel healthier.
3. Your immune system
Exercise is always good for your immune system. The more active you are, the better. “Moderate exercise makes immune cells more active, so they’re ready to ﬁght off infection” says Cath Collins, Chief Dietician at St George’s Hospital, London.
4. Your sleep
Cycling will help you get a good, restful night sleep. This is because the outside exercise exposes you to daylight which helps your circadian rhythm and rids your body of cortisol – the stress hormone – which can prevent regenerative sleep.
5. Your brain
Research has found that a 5% improvement in cardio fitness from cycling led to an improvement of up to 15% in mental tests. This can be because cycling helps build new brain cells in the region responsible for memory.
